We are a small interior studio in Helsinki, designing rooms that feel calm, work hard and age well.
Sandstone&co started in 2010 with one client, one apartment in Kallio and a borrowed drawing table. We still work from Helsinki, a few streets from where it began.
We design homes, small hotels, cafés and the occasional workplace, mostly across the Nordics, with a few houses in Italy and Spain.
Since then we have finished 140 interiors and taken home a handful of awards, but we still take on only four projects at a time.
Every project starts on site. We measure the rooms ourselves, sit in them at different times of day and decide what stays before we draw anything new.
We work with a short list of joiners, upholsterers and stonemasons we trust, and we stay on site until the last shelf is hung.
Three rules we bring to every room, from a studio flat to a hotel.

Keep what works
Old floors, original windows, a good wall of shelves. We start by deciding what stays and design everything else around it.

Fewer, better materials
Most rooms need three or four materials used well. We choose wood, stone, lime paint and linen that look better after ten years of use.
03.
Made close to home
Joinery, upholstery and stonework come from makers we know by name, most of them within a day's drive of the studio.
We work from a former print shop in Punavuori, around one long table, with a wall of drawers full of samples and a small kitchen where most client meetings end up.
